The essentials

Paperwork, payment & DVLA

Understand the handover, payment and destruction records.

3 min read
01

Who is responsible for the vehicle?

Record the business taking custody and the receiving facility. Tell DVLA using its official process and keep confirmation. Do not rely on an informal assurance that somebody else will do it.

02

When a destruction certificate applies

GOV.UK says a certificate of destruction should be issued within seven days for an eligible car that is completely scrapped. If the facility repairs and resells it, that certificate is not issued.

03

Payment in England and Wales

For a vehicle being scrapped in England or Wales, payment must be by bank transfer or cheque, rather than cash. The position described here is specific to scrapping, not every used-car sale.

04

Ask before handover

Confirm the payment method, timescale and who will issue the documents. Keep your receipt and contact the business promptly if an agreed document or payment does not arrive.
